November 4th, 2011

The writing has been tough going again lately.  Don (my beloved hubby) has been having some health problems again, which really cuts into daily life (mine, not to mention his) Too much sturm und drang, and I find I can’t make myself think about writing – or anything – for a while even after things calm down.

My Avondale Writers’ Conference seminar on October 29 went very well. I enjoyed visiting with my fellow Poisoned Pen Press authors and friends Betty Webb and Fred Ramsay, as well as meeting the delightful Tammy Kaehler, who was there as part of the launch tour for her first mystery, Dead Man’s Switch. Don originally planned to go with me, but he wasn’t feeling well and stayed home.    Most of the time I’m fairly successful at living in the moment, but every once in a while I lose it over the oddest things.  I was watching Saturday Night Live, and when the musical guest band came on (Foster the People), the young lead singer guy was so cheerful and full of life that I burst into tears in mourning for my lost youth.

I always remember that things could be a lot worse, and have been. Don seems to be feeling better over the last couple of days, and he has no more doctors appointments for 10 days (unless things get worse, but we won’t think about that), so I hope to be able to immerse myself in finishing the new book.

November is NaNoWriMo, (National Novel Writing Month) which is appropriate. NaNoWriMo is run by a tiny but mighty nonprofit called the Office of Letters and Light. This is from their website: National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenges you to write a 50,000-word novel, from scratch, in the month of November. It’s a global, uproariously fun endeavor, where participants exchange advice and writing tips on the NaNoWriMo website and in real life, with group write-ins held in coffeeshops, living rooms, and libraries all around the world. In 2010, 200,500 people took part in National Novel Writing Month. Always wanted to write a book? Check it out at www.nanowrimo.org

Maybe I can plug in to the inspired collective consciousness of thousands of people all trying to write their novels at once, and finally finish my owm.
