October 1st, 2006

Time really flies when you’re having fun. I’ve done five events since Hornswoggled came out, two of which were very good, two of which were pretty slow, and one of which was better but nothing to write home about. I have no idea why. I just show up and do my duty as charmingly as I possibly can.

We’re off to Oklahoma for a whirlwind tour to promote Hornswoggled and stump for votes for The Old Buzzard Had It Coming. I’ll be doing five cities in ten days. We’re driving from Arizona, which is a beautiful trip the first five hundred times you do it, but after that, it’s just exhausing. I don’t think I want to take any more of these long driving trips after this one, unless somebody pays me to do it. The house sitter will be moving in before we go, along with his wife and Mavis, the cutest and yappiest dog ever born.

It’s difficult when you start a writing career to know what the most effective things are to do to gain attention for your books. I think sometimes that I’d be better served to do fewer signings and start concentrating on attending the big writing conferences. That way I’d get to know some of the other mystery writers around the country, and maybe get a little bit wider exposure. When I first started, I was advised to concentrate on a narrower audience until I was better known, which I have done, and it has served me well. But I’m wondering when the law of diminishing returns kicks in. I’ll let you know, Dear Reader, after this trip.

If you are anywhere near Oklahoma during the first part of October, please check out my schedule, which is posted on the Events page of this site. Note that I have changed the date on the Acorn Book Club event from Oct 13 to Oct 12. I somehow mistook the date, but fortunately am now well straightened out.
