I’m writing this from the Marriott Hotel high atop a hill on Tech Center Drive in Colorado Springs. The hotel is grand and the view is pretty spectacular, but the wind is blowing like a son-of-a-gun and it’s chilly to boot. Don and I walked around the hotel to admire the scenery after we got here , and let me tell you that my coiffure is no more. We made a leisurely trip up to Colorado, since we’re not endurance drivers. We left the Phoenix area on Tuesday and drove the scenic route up State Highway 87 through the mountains to Winslow, where we ate at our favorite restaurant at La Posada Inn, then picked up I-40 and drove to Grants, NM, where we spent the night.

The weather was clear, but the wind was blowing a gale when we got up the next morning, and it blew 50 mph directly on the left side of our van all the way to Albuquerque, where we turned north on I-25 and drove into a headwind until we got to Raton, NM. I expect our gas milage was seriously hampered, and we were feeling seriously windblown. We stayed in a nice Comfort Inn and ate Mexican food, so we were feeling good when we started out this morning. The sky was sunny and cloudless, but sadly the wind was still going like gangbusters, and still is, as I write this at 4:30 in the afternoon. It was still a nice trip, though. We stopped in Trinidad and in Walsenburg, CO, on our way up here, just to look around, and I enjoyed that immensely. Trinidad, especially, is a very pretty little place, all hilly and treed, full of turn-of-the-20th-Century buildings, with the Rio Grande running right through the middle of town.

I’m here to attend my first Women Writing the West Conference, which starts tomorrow afternoon and runs through Sunday morning, and Don came along for the ride, and to visit his sister and her family in the bargain. I don’t know if I’ll get a chance to make another entry while I’m here, so I thought I’d get a jump on things and write about the trip, at least. If I can, I’ll write more on the Type M 4 Murder blog in a day or two, Dear Reader, and between both these blogs, keep you informed on the progress of the Conference/Book Tour phase of the new book release. Ah, the writer’s life!
